I have 22AWG 15ft RCA-to-3.5mm cable and another one 22AWG for a shorter 7ft cable RCA-to-3.5mm, I'm not sure if that's overkill. 15ft cable is going from PC (3.5mm output) to JVC stereo system (RCA input) 7ft cable going from TV (3.5mm output) to Alesis music production speakers (RCA input)
Question: I have 12 gauge wire running from a banana plug outlet to my speakers. When I make connects from my amp to the speaker outlet the 12 gauge is a bit heavy and puts some stress on the wires in the amp input. Could I connect from the amp to the outlets with lower gauge wire than what I am running
Life saver, thanks for this!
2 Points he missed out: 1) The affect of phase change on speakers through crossover/network cards. 2) The phases of the freq for both speakers should not be different. So if I plug them both in the wrong direction (+ to - and vice versa) and they both are in the same phase, I would assume it to work fine. Many old speakers will come with wires coming out of the box, one of the 2 wire will be striped and you dont know if that striped wire should be negative or positive.

Nice and simple understanding input nd output single
Cette conversation rappelle le pouvoir du dialogue pour combler les divisions et favoriser la compréhension. C'est édifiant.👅
Great mic for recording acoustic I've used one many times!!
I was missing a description of dithering, as this can seriously affect the perceived noise .... ?
Try: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valdemar_Poulsen
Didn't have a microphone as a kid, I had a speaker i used as a microphone. Yes it did work well for me.
I accidentally reversed polarity to the left side of my 2 channel amplifier when I was younger not knowing it mattered. To my surprise, the left side produced a slight echo. At the time it was kind of cool but eventually became annoying
00:32 "Notice, when I push down and hold, we only see a pulse that goes upward and returns to zero line." THAT is NOT what your scope image showed. REALITY: It "goes upward" then the field collapses and produce voltage in the opposite direction. Why do I have to point this out. There are no DIODES in that circuit. Please explain your error.
Very interesting! Nice piece of history there
The guest, Nicholas Bergh, has so many interactions with history in his work. It’s incredible to hear his perspective. Glad you appreciate it too. Thanks for watching!
What microphone are you using. Sounds great! How much EQ or processing?
That’s the Electro-Voice RE20. Minimal EQ and mild compression.
You hear stuff like "Paul is dead."
Thank you very much! Next, do a video about speaker wires.
I probably have 5 miles worth twisted and laid out down there. This demands a new appreciation of what we were taking for granted. I guess I didn't do too bad, for a home studio, she does pretty good. Little white noise if you crank it way up but other than that, not bad if I may say so. Thanks for the education. Just cause I have done it for a few days doesn't mean I have all the knowledge. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I had ordered the Scarlett Solo yesterday and now canceled the order to get the 2i2 instead! I think there is a good chance that I will use a second microphone in the future. And it's only 20 bucks more.
I have to agree with Andrew Schepps in saying that: "It's much more important how a mix feels than how it sounds."
You have given a very clear and easily understood picture of this. Unfortunately my iPad speaker is not up to the task. The iPad sounds good until a series of tests like these show it’s short comings up. Cleverly its sound system fools the ear. I neeed some external speakers. 🙏🏼
Excellent video.
Don't overwork ❌ Take some rest ✅ Try this someday 👇🏻 Something that take not much effort & has significant impact
Something fell in the background during 2700 ft 😮
It’s actually a monitor that’s at a near perpendicular angle to the camera lol it does look like something fell though 😅
Excellent video. First time I've the + and - of an xlr cable explained. It's usually called hot, neutral and ground. Neutral for - is a terrible way to say it, when it's out of phase 180 degrees. Unless I totally misunderstood. This really makes we think about the cat 5 route for super long cables. One thing troubled me: comparing the longer lengths of cable using pink noise. I heard a slight shift with higher frequencies being slightly more emphasized with the longer lengths of cable which is counter-intuitive and counter to your graph. Perhaps it's just me.
Great presentation! Your video helped me greatly. This is a great channel. Thank you!
Well there goes my dream of having a sub 200 dollar pc just for audio projects
Amazing how Germany lost the war.
Fascinating video! I'm curious if the same amount of noise would be introduced if a long cable was stretched out it's entire length between connectors vs. the same length being of cable being mostly coiled up with the connectors being relatively close to each other. I'm sure the particulars of the space and other nearby electrical equipment would be the prevailing factors, but my hunch is that a coiled cable would pick up less noise than a stretched one.
Back in the 80s at a radio station as a producer I would get a feed tape from newsroom of the daily Paul Harvey broadcast and had to chop that sucker down to 3 1/2 minutes (if you remember Paul Harvey can you imagine that?). White “china marker” pencil, flat/angle aluminum block, adhesive tape, and even feed dumping waste tape into a trash can! On an Ampex ATR-100 probably the finest 1/4” tape machine ever manufactured. And editing Paul Harvey! Felt like cutting Shakespeare lol. Even back then we had some older tape machines still in service rhat had been commissioned in the 1950s. Those things were built to run 24/7/365 - with full time engineer maintenance of course. Radio was relevant way back when. The station was staffed 24/7 and these machines ran like tanks the whole time. Page….. two!
In production & editing you prefer digital because of unlimited editing and undo, but does this not also influence the creative decisions you take during production? The digital approach could lead to something one could call "overengineering" for example, whereas analog puts some constraints that might stimulate creativity.
Speakers wired backwards, LISTEN of course. Just like a lightbulb wired backwards CAST SHADOWS
Just curious about something you mentioned in this video and another one I saw earlier in the day. When it comes to bass guitars, I’ve connected bass guitars to the mixer a few different ways depending on the situation. I’ve used a DI box, I’ve connected the bass amp direct to the board when the amp had a direct out, I’ve put a Shure Beta 58 or AKG D112 in front of the bass amp, or I’ve simultaneously done two of these things. For example, bass to board via DI box and a direct out from the bass amp. When it comes to acoustic guitars, I’ll connect the guitar to the board via DI box if it has pickups. If no pickups, I’ll put a mic on the guitar. When it comes to electric guitars, I’ve always put an SM57 in front of my guitar player’s guitar amp. Actually, I use a pair of SM57s because he likes to run his rig in stereo. The thing you’ve mentioned in a couple of your videos is to connect an electric guitar to the board via a DI box. I have never, ever done that. Why do you send an electric guitar signal direct to the board via DI box and bypass all of their pedal effects, tone controls, etc.?
nothing ... the wases are the same doesnt matter
Awesome shorts!
Works just like a dynamic microphone. There are speakers that works like a condenser mic as well (electrostatic speakers), even if they are not as common as the typical magnetic ones.
I love this interview. I love hearing someone that really knows what they are talking about and can explain it in a way that doesn't sound like marketing speak.
This could actually be used to make a Morse code system
It could also be used to reproduce the sounds of Pink Floyd.
U explain so much great stuff Bro 💯
Super interesting.
On the last one of these videos where you mentioned tape bias being simultaneously discovered in multiple countries I was going to mention stories I had heard about the allies not being able to understand how Hitler could broadcast what they thought was live speeches in such disparate locations. The rest was exactly what was stated here so it must have just been a vast improvement in technology!
I believe that the photo of Bing Crosby at the beginning of your program was taken at the experimental video tape recorder lab in the very early 1950s. I go a set of 3D slides of that facility. Unfortunately, all the pix of Crosby had been cherry picked from the set. This did not bother me because I wanted to see the hardware anyway. Crosby's video recording lasted until 1954 when Ampex blew the doors off of THAT industry. Video recording had the same impact on television as audio tape did for radio.
This is pretty cool thanks Kyle
When this happens, you're just going to have to phase the music.
There is a happy midpoint where you'll get great results without overspending. The grossly overpriced snake oil is a complete waste of money. Do your homework. Save your money.
I appreciate these mini audio recording history lessons, Kyle. Thanks for posting!
This channel is a treasure trove
